50 years on - What’s your understanding and use of Arnstein’s Ladder of Participation?

By Wendy Sarkissian and Maxine Schleger

The Journal of the American Planning Association (JAPA) has accepted a proposal by us to prepare an article for their journal in 2019 commemorating the 50th anniversary of the publication of Sherry Arnstein’s landmark journal article “A Ladder of Citizen Participation” (1969).

Our proposal involved a study of the attitudes and behaviour of Australian and New Zealand practitioners working in community engagement.

We invite you to participate in our study and contribute to our survey of Australian and New Zealand practitioners’ understanding (and use of) Arnstein’s Ladder.

As an incentive to encourage you to complete this survey, we are offering three hours of online consultation with Dr. Wendy Sarkissian, LFPIA, to be made available to the winning survey respondent who will be selected at random.

We hope that this incentive will encourage you to provide as much information as possible in your survey response, so that we can gather a full understanding of the relevance of Sherry Arnstein’s classic Ladder to contemporary community engagement practice in Australia and New Zealand.

It will take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. THIS SURVEY WILL BE OPEN UNTIL 20 AUGUST.

Please do not hesitate to contact us about this survey at wendy@sarkissian.com.au
